This week we testified at the New York City Council on behalf of Right to Counsel, along with Jared Trujillo, President of the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys – UAW 2325, the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and District Council 37, AFSCME.
We stood with other providers, advocacy organizations, and tenant organizers to urge the City Council to increase RTC eligibility from 200% of the federal poverty limit (FPL) to 400% FPL, expand the types of cases that are covered by RTC to ensure that tenants have the right to a lawyer for NYCHA cases and appeals, provide funding for organizers, and fully fund RTC so that providers do not have to cut corners and tenants can get the fullest high-quality services they deserve.
